Master of Arts in Christian Studies

Introduction & Objectives

The Master of Arts in Christian Studies (MCS) program is designed to equip and empower Christians to engage biblically and theologically within Asian contexts. It aims to help students develop a public witness that is prophetic and contextually relevant. The program focuses on balancing Western and Asian perspectives through a dialogical learning model and looks towards the wider Anglican communion in the Asia-Pacific region for resources and conversation.

The program aims to help Christians

  • Develop Asian Christian thinking locally and regionally using Asian methods and resources, in dialogue with perspectives from the West and the Majority World.
  • Understand what it means to be an Asian Christian by engaging with current biblical scholarship, theological discourses, and church history.
  • Analyze the relationship between scholarship and contextual issues to create new biblical interpretations and innovative theological practices.
  • Critically examine Eurocentric theologies and build responses that amplify voices from the Majority World.

Distinguishing Features

  • The program moves away intentionally from Western forms of conservatism and Eurocentrism to focus on regional contexts, particularly the Asia-Pacific, for resources to read the Bible and do theology.
  • It leverages on the Anglican Communion’s strengths and resources across the world to build a more comprehensive curriculum.

Dissertation

The module is a guided research project to produce a dissertation of up to 15,000 words (English)/30,000 words (Chinese).

Requirements and Assessment

  • Applicants must have a recognized Bachelor’s degree; majors in subjects other than Theology or Religious Studies are welcomed.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:
    • At least one bachelor’s or master’s degree in which English language was the primary language of instruction; OR
    • IELTS overall score of 6.0; OR
    • TOEFL with a minimum overall score of 74; OR
    • International Baccalaureate (IB) English A with Grade 4 in HL or Grade 5 in SL; OR
    • International Baccalaureate (IB) English B with Grade 5 in HL or Grade 6 in SL; OR
    • Level 4 in HKDSE English Language; OR
    • Grade D in HKALE Use of English
  • Medium of Instruction: Chinese and English
  • Graduation Requirements:
    • Option 1: 24 credits (2 Core Modules + 4 Elective Modules)
    • Option 2: 24 credits (2 Core Modules + 1 Elective Modules + Dissertation) for PhD progression.

Duration

  • Full-time: One Year (12 months)
  • Part-time: Two Years (24 months)

  • Tuition Fee: HK$58,800 per programme
  • Audit Fee: HK$5,880 per module
  • Extension Fee: HK$2,000 per year
