Diploma of Sacred Music

Programme Information

Deeply rooted in the Anglican tradition, music plays a quintessential role in Christian worship. To live out this integral tradition, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Ming Hua Theological College is committed to nurturing the next generation of church musicians in the local community and beyond, through setting up different sacred music programmes. The Diploma of Sacred Music allows interested individuals to acquire practical, theoretical, and liturgical knowledge essential for serving in the music ministry through a two-year part-time programme. Upon completion of the programme, students will be offered a ‘Diploma of Sacred Music’ awarded by Ming Hua Theological College.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of the diploma programme, students will be able to:

• execute their instrumental playing and/or singing skills confidently and competently when serving for the church music ministry;
• apply liturgical knowledge to select appropriate repertoires for worship in different liturgical traditions and seasons;
• evaluate the fundamental aesthetics of various Western classical music genres through a solid foundation in music theory and history.

Programme Structure

Students should complete eight compulsory courses within the study period.

Remarks:

1. Students can be exempted from the ‘Grade 8 Theory’ if they fulfil one of the following conditions:

• attained a pass or above in the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 8 Theory Examination
• awarded with a certificate of ABRSM Grade 8 Theory Course offered by HKSKH Ming Hua Theological College

2. Auditing students are welcome.

Admission Requirements

Education Qualification:

• attained Level 2 or equivalent or above in five subjects – including Chinese Language and English Language – in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE), OR
• attained Level 2 / Grade E or above in five subjects – including Chinese Language and English Language – in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent

Music Qualification:

• attained a passing result in the Grade 6 Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Practical Examination, or equivalent level by similar organizations; AND
• attained a passing result in the Grade 5 Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Theory Examination
